About Albert Bunder

Everything we know about the filmmaker

While Albert Bunder is one of the most talked about directors of regional exploitation movies, not much is known about him outside of what the man himself has told us. Much of the information on this site has been gathered by those who knew Bunder, those who attended the few Bunder conventions in the 1990s and early 2000s (known now as BunderCons), and cobbled together from obscure print sources.

Albert Bunder was born around 1940 in the Netherlands to a Dutch father and German mother. Originally van Bunder, the name was likely changed to just Bunder when they arrived in America shortly after Albert was born, settling in Cleveland, Ohio. Not much is known about Albert’s early life (we are open to learning more!). In the 1960’s, while working as a shoe salesman, he began shooting his first films on 8mm. Casting strangers and folks he’d meet at local dive bars, he filmed what has been determined as the first Bunder film: Death Knockers – only mentioned by Albert once at a convention in the 1990’s (thanks Jordy for the info!!). Apparently it followed a buxom female grim reaper as she collected the souls of men using her large, um, assets. His early movies were said to be more sexploitation than anything else, often featuring full-frontal female and male nudity. One of these films that is known to exist is The Painus in My Anus – a 30-minute sex comedy that didn’t reach the bootleg community until 1997, as evidenced by the cover featuring a photo from the making of Squirt (thanks for the information, Erik – he has the only known copy of this film). This was also Bunder’s first collaboration with actor, stunt man, and writer Thorny the Gooch. No one knows what Thorny’s real name was but it is believed that Thorny was born in the early 1950’s and was the downstairs tenant in Bunder’s duplex in the early 1970’s.

Thorny, Bunder, and Bunder’s ex-wife, Melody, also produced the STOP! series during this time, and shopped the films around local adult theaters, though it is unknown whether there were any takers. Another Bunder mainstay, Trevor Lunch, appeared briefly in STOP! STOP! STOP! and STOP! 4 as the partner of the main police officer. In 2009, an unknown individual came forward claiming to have a 16mm print of STOP! 4 but no proof was offered and the individual did not respond to repeated emails. Eventually, the STOP! series made it to release at an early BunderCon (some say it’s 1990, others say it’s 1991) but none of the original copies of the series have appeared on the open market.

Soon after shooting STOP! 4, Albert and Melody separated. Within a year, he was married to Patricia, who has remained his wife. Sometime in the early 1970s, Albert and his second wife welcomed their first son, Albert Jr., into the world. Around the same time, Bunder had spun his once employment in the shoe shop in which he worked as a young man into ownership. With some extra money in his pocket, Bunder returned to filmmaking with a little more budget and a lot of ideas. He first made The Booger Wolf – a 45-minute film about a teenage werewolf. Several clips of The Booger Wolf has made it online – the most accessible is the transformation scene – but the full film remains elusive to majority of Bunder fans. According to those who have seen the film (even I haven’t gotten a copy!!!), many of the same costumes, sets, and plot points were recycled the next year in the far superior film The Latkethrope. The movie follows a Jewish teenager who discovers he’s a werewolf on his bar mitzvah, only to wreak havoc on his small town during the eight nights of Hanukkah. To some, this is Albert’s finest work: funny, gory, and unhinged. It also marked the third film made with Trevor Lunch.

But he followed this film up with the killer animal picture Goreilla! about a massive, mutated gorilla that escapes a military laboratory and terrorizes a city. This has not garnered a similar positive response, as the movie lacks the laughs of Latkethrope and signaled Bunder’s deviation from horror into science-fiction and action films. During the 1970s, him and his wife welcomed another son and a daughter in the world, though not much is known about them.

With the advent of home video recording equipment, Bunder was now able to shoot his films quickly and cheaply. The first film, shot entirely in a warehouse owned by his shoe company, was Mongos From Space – a science-fiction movie featuring a scantily-clad protagonist who is abducted by the Mongos, a half-alien/half-robot, yet dimwitted, species that wants to mate with her to produce a smarter super race to dominate the galaxy. She must escape their clutches and somehow find her way back to Earth, with the help of a sympathetic Mongo (again, played by Trevor Lunch). For a science fiction movie shot in several days, it’s a pretty competent story though the limitations of the budget do hamstring some of the more fantastical scenes of the picture.

Following the release of Mongos From Space, a small group of Bunder fans in Cleveland got together to watch all of the existing Bunder films together. This is earliest known get-together surrounding Bunder, so it is no referred to as BunderCon 1981, even though there were only five or so people in attendance. This group would grow over the years to dozens of fans in Cleveland and beyond, and they celebrate BunderCon each year in Cleveland. There are no public tickets sold for BunderCon and it is not advertised, existing as an invite-only convention. Throughout the years, this is where Albert Bunder would sell majority of his films, often for high prices. The secretive nature of the group might also help explain why so few official releases of Bunder films make it to the secondary market. On the other hand, almost all bootlegs can be traced back to BunderCon participants, so we have them to thank for exposing Albert Bunder to the rest of the world.

Bunder was thought to have financed many of his films personally, as he had expanded ownership to two popular shoe stores in the Cleveland area. Following the filming of Mongos From Space, Albert Bunder teamed up with actor Dint Warley to shoot two films back-to-back: Borgman’s Revenge, a police procedural, and I’m Gonna Shoot Your Ass Off, his first high-octane action film. The 55-minute Borgman’s Revenge doesn’t have much of note besides it being the second film collaboration of Bunder and actress Chrissy Kreizer. In I’m Gonna Shoot Your Ass Off, Warley stars as Clint Storm, a former Army Ranger who is hot on the trail of an assassin named Juan “The Panther” who is killing prominent government officials. Alongside his sexy side kick Samantha Bucks, they unravel a dasteredly plot that has implications farther reaching than he originally thought. This marked the last collaboration between Bunder and actor Trevor Lunch. Clearly designed for mass consumption, I’m Gonna Shoot Your Ass Off never really got any traction with distributors (though some claim this film had a Canadian release by Celebrity Video Presentations but no known copy has surfaced), as this film was self-distributed by Bunder himself at conventions throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Release of Kick or Perish! Found…And It’s Called DRAGON FARTER?!?!?!

February 1, 2024 – by BunderFan76

What a way to kick off the new year! The internet is buzzing today, at least amongst Bunderheads and everyone else in the Slime Cocoon, after a post was made on Facebook showing off an unknown release of “Kick or Perish!”, but it’s underneath the title “Dragon Farter”. This is a massive piece of Bunder news and I haven’t been able to confirm it directly, but this comes straight from Chris G., who has contributed Bunder news in the past, so there’s no real need to doubt its authenticity. Also, a few Bunder fans are in the post vouching for its authenticity.

“Ungodly rare” says Ryan T. in the post – and yes Ryan T! That’s pretty rare!!!

Could this be another foreign release of a Bunder film, trying to avoid the litigious eye of Albert Bunder Jr., as suggested by verified Bunderite Jordy D. in the post? Who knows…but we are excited for the unearthing of another Bunder classic!!

Keep your eye out and, as always – STAY GOOPY!

New website!

August 31, 2022 – by BunderFan76

Hey everyone – it’s been a while! Life has been crazy for us, so thanks for hanging in there. Now to the good news: welcome to our new website!! We are excited to give our site the first real update in many many years and this only thanks to a few huge Bunder-fanatics out there and our very talented webmaster…excuse me, web designer (he told me no one calls them webmasters anymore!). With the new site, it should be a lot easier for me to post updates and Bunder news.

I also come with some really awesome news: for the first time in three years…BUNDERCON IS BACK BABY! Details are being ironed out but it sounds like the next BunderCon will take place in Spring 2023!! As we get closer to the new year, we’ll share some news about the Con, but I’m sure most of you have already gotten your invite. To the organizers who promised us the con would be back, I’d just like to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! They have been working tirelessly to make this a reality and we’re excited to get back together with the rest of the Slime Cocoon.

Until next time – STAY GOOPY!

For The Second Year in a Row, BunderCon Cancelled

March 30, 2021 – by BunderFan76

Hey everyone – sorry to come back to you guys with more bad news: for the second consecutive year, BunderCon has been cancelled due to the pandemic. While there was some hope to have a Con with the vaccines and all, the organizers could not find a suitable venue and enough demand for a BunderCon this year. This is a disappointing development but knowing the folks who put this one each year, they tried their hardest to make it happen.

I’d also like to say that in some of the Albert Bunder groups and channels, there is some talk that there will never be another BunderCon. Here’s something straight from one of the organizers: “There will be more BunderCons…as long as we are a community, there will be some type of Bunder-themed get-together.”

As with anything over the past year, you gotta look on the bright side. I believe what the BunderCon folks are saying and I can’t wait to see the whole community when we can meet in person again. Stay strong!

BunderCon Cancelled Due to Virus

March 11, 2020 – by BunderFan76

Hey everyone – bad news: for the first time in it’s long and illustrious history, BunderCon has been cancelled due to the spread of the Coronavirus.

I know how disappointing this is to all of you Bunder fans but the folks putting the Con on this year just don’t want to endanger any people. While the communication to me said “cancelled”, others have said that it may be postponed until later in the year. Whatever the case is, this is a huge blow to the whole Bunder community. Wish I was coming with better news. 🙁

There’s some incredible Bunder news – according to posts on Facebook, it sounds like someone has located a copy of Redneck Bloodfuck…on Beta!!! Copy of Quadnocular Sells for $1500!!!!!!!!!!

February 16, 2020 – by BunderFan76

Not much has happened in the last year on the Bunder front, but one thing did happen that affects all Quadnocular owners!

Anyone who is connected with the high-stakes world of buying and trading Bunder films is in for a shock: Quadnocular sold in January for $1500 in a private sale!

The last Quadnocular sold about two years ago for $800, so this is quite a rise in one of the more common Bunder films. But given how crazy common VHS prices have gotten, I shouldn’t have been shocked to see a Bunder fetch that much. The highest Bunder ever sold came last year when Slime Cocoon sold for $2200.

So congratulations to Chris G. for the massive sale – he’s also a blessed man when it comes to Quadnocular as he has the only known German release of the film. As for the new owner, enjoy one of the best Bunders in existence and, as always, STAY GOOPY!

Albert Bunder Jr. Tries To Shut Down AlbertBunder.com!

February 16, 2020 – by BunderFan76

You may have noticed that the site has “down” for a little over a year now. Well get ready for a helluva story!

Back in December of 2018, I received a call from my previous hosting company (a local company here in Cleveland that helped me with the original version of this site back in the late 1990s) saying that they got a cease-and-desist letter from Albert Bunder Jr. Now, the frequent run-ins I’ve had with Bunder Jr. are well-documented in the community, and I know a lot of you have gotten grief from the son of The Man himself. Well, he certainly upped his game in 2018 because now he was threatening to sue me unless I scrap the website.

Obviously, this spooked me pretty badly. I don’t have a lot of money to operate this website and only do so because of some nice donors throughout the years. So I certainly cannot afford a gigantic lawsuit – this led me to shuttering the website without any explanation back at the beginning of 2019.

Since then, I’ve consulted with a member of the Bunder fan community who is a lawyer. After many discussions and much deliberation, we concluded that Albert Bunder Jr. has no ground to stand on when it comes to reporting factual information about his father. So in August of last year, I decided to turn the site back on, but my host of two decades said they would not allow the website on their server anymore.

I’m not very computer-savvy – I only know how to do very simple HTML changes to keep the site current – so I was stuck at this point. Again, I reached out to the small but dedicated Bunder community and thankfully was helped by someone with a background in website design. It’s amazing how helpful and talented our community is!

During this downtime, I also failed to renew the old domain so it went back on the market in February and was snatched up by another person. But thanks to the guidance of my lawyer friend, I feel comfortable with buying AlbertBunder.com!

So after over a year being offline, we are back! You may have noticed that the news area has changed – well, whatever was powering that on the old system was not compatible with what we are on now, so we’ve unfortunately lost access to the years of blog updates. I still have them on a disk and can manually upload them at some point, but it seems like a lot of work after having dealt with getting this site back online!

You should see an improvement in how fast the pages load and we shouldn’t have the outages that we’ve had in the past. I had to also take down the link to the community forums as they were rarely used as most of the community now talks on Facebook.

Anyway that’s the update – welcome back everyone! Thanks for all of the support and as always – STAY GOOPY!
